A lovely island within walking distance from the Metro that will allow you to feel like you're far away from the city. The natural beauty and sense of solitude serve as a wonderful monument to Teddy Roosevelt. Highly recommended for a nice few hours in nature.

Big picture: if you’d like shade from beautiful trees on an outdoor walk, Roosevelt Island is a good choice!

How to access it: the pedestrian bridge is a short walk from the Rosslyn Metrorail stop

Put on your explorer’s hat: they have infographics of Theodore Roosevelt’s life in the park to contextualize the beautiful monument! I consider Theodore’s monument to be a hidden gem of D.C. monument landscape.

Situational awareness: if you’re on foot, watch out for bike riders along the way! I’m unsure if there are restrooms or tables to eat

The bottom line: I highly recommend checking out this park if you’d like a forest experience near D.C.

A relaxing pocket of nature right in the middle of the city. Love it!

Enjoyed the 1.5 loop trail around the island with my boys.
The wetlands portion had a nice elevated walkway.
We saw some paddle boarders trying to rescue a bird of prey that couldn’t escape the river.

I'm not sure how I didn't realize this was here. Multiple times in DC and I had no idea this beautiful park existed. Don't miss it!

What a wonderful place to see wildlife! The island’s natural beauty and peace is contrasted on all sides by the city. Love to see protected true marshland and all the creatures who call it home. Parking is usually available, but if not park in Rosslyn and take the pedestrian bridge.

Lots of free parking before crossing the bridge to the island. Walking the loop around the whole island was lots of fun but I wish they made the boardwalk a little wider as it was awkward trying to pass other people going the other direction. I would not recommend bringing your dog for this reason. Bathrooms accessible on the island. The monument was very neat with a wide sprawl of bridges, waterways, and statues!

I usually love all NPS sites but this one was a dud. Not sure why it has such high reviews. The swamp is boring to walk around and I have no clue why runners/joggers choose this place when there are a million other places to go. The boardwalk could be widened a little bit and was slanting downward in some places. It was a bit loud due to traffic and overhead airplanes so didn't feel like a good nature experience. It felt like D.C. didn't know what to do with this piece of worthless land so they gave it to the NPS and they tried turning it into a memorial to Roosevelt. Also, parking was maxed out and cars were waiting for a spot.
