I didn't spend much time here, but did notice there's a Starbucks, a couple of food trucks, and some homeless people in this area. It's an open area that's free to the public, it's ok to walk through during the day, on the way to a shopping plaza nearby.
The Christmas display at Pioneer Square is an absolute winter wonderland! The centerpiece, a gigantic and beautifully decorated Christmas tree, is truly a sight to behold. It's adorned with countless twinkling lights that bring a magical glow to the area. The surrounding lightings add to the festive ambiance, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere that captures the spirit of the holiday season. This spot has become a must-visit destination for me during the Christmas period, perfect for both family outings and romantic evening strolls. Highly recommend for anyone looking to immerse themselves in holiday cheer!
We went in support of the Menorah lighting. It was a nice experience where we felt welcomed and appreciated. The security was understandable given the current political situation but didn't feel intrusive or overdone. All in all we had a lovely time and Beatrice met lots of new friends.
My impression: Better than a few months ago, but not as great as it used to be.
Pioneer Square was great in Portland's heydays. Full of life as people buzzed around walking, meeting, shopping. It was a friendly place that during the holidays had a sparkle of magic when the city erected a massive Xmas tree. There were homeless people, but not the blatant drug abuse. And there were enough people around that one felt safe.
I recently spent 15-20 mins at Pioneer Square waiting for the last No. 8 bus around 11 pm. I am 6 foot 2 male and usually people leave me alone. But I can get uncomfortable or nervous when I perceive a situation as dangerous. I was positively surprised by my 15-20 mins wait: For the most part I was fine. At some point a drunk and dishevelled man came down the street who banged something against a garbage bin. I changed the side of the street and he passed. There was otherwise quite a bit foot traffic as people left the Nines and one or two people waited for a bus. Overall, I felt safe.
I still feel the city has to do much more to make everyone feel safe in Portland at any hour. This is not the place to discuss the underlying politics, but I think we can all agree that the current situation is not what citizens and visitors want and our leadership has to find ways to improve the situation asap.

Portland's living room is always my favorite place downtown. And the city does there best to keep it cleaned up and safe. This place holds good memories of my younger days and is a good spot for me to reminisce.
It was quite fun to hear musical concert while walking around downtown. The food cards are nice and the lines can be rather long. A lot of places to sit but not a lot of shade. It's a key connection point for all of the light rail
This public space was really great to visit. There were a lot of people present but the overall vibe was awesome. We were lucky that there was a free art session going on, which my family really enjoyed. Overall a great experience.
