This alone is worth the visit, but it is just one of many that tell a story that needs to be remembered.
The monument was a requirement for this first visit to Vicksburg. Wonderful recognition of these men in this horrific engagement. 1st and 3rd Mississippi Regiments. Would lose their state designation and become United States Colored Troop through the duration of the war. Only the 54th Massachusetts maintained it's identity to the state where there members were enlisted.
Inspiring and emotional tribute to men to fought for so much more than we might imagine today.
Very moving experience. Nothing in the history books prepared me for this.
