Primrose is definitely not the only restaurant that does it. But a 20% service fee and also asking for more gratuity on top of it is a bit insulting. It feels like a tantrum protest against initiative 82. Customers are not children. We understand inflation and we understand prices should be commensurate with costs. Every business has to deal with this and they do so by being transparent and adjusting prices accordingly - not with underhandedness. It’s trying to capitalize on confusion and ambiguity.

The tired line restaurant managers use is that they “don’t want to raise prices”. Well, what is a 20% fee if not raising prices. They should either raise the prices AND add 20% gratuity or raise the prices and let people leave reasonable tips. Counting on some people to pay 40%+ above “sticker price” out of guilt doesn’t seem like a good business model. Treat us like adults. Price the food accordingly. It must be awkward to be a server here. Yeesh.

Other than the sour taste of high fees plus gratuity, food was good.

The epitome of excellence, from the moment you walk in to the moment you leave, everything is executed to perfection. The staff is lovely and warm, the food is stellar, and the ambiance is unbeatable. Everything make you feel warm and at home. We had the squash salad, mac and cheese, and for entrees chose the smash burger and steak frites.

Went here for a small little birthday dinner. The staff was very attentive and the food was great. Drinks were strong and enjoyable. Definitely recommend if your in the area

One of the worst dining experiences I've had in DC. You're greeted with a cutesy note when you sit down blaming the price of eggs (which have gone down to below-normal prices) for an automatic 20% service charge. They make it very clear that despite caring about their staff, this is NOT A TIP. I ordered the duck and like other reviewers, it's laughable. It's $35 (including the 20% fee) and had six quarter-sized pieces of duck, two of which were basically raw and felt unsafe to eat. I counted 11 french fries on the plate and nothing else. Dinner was ultimately $95 for two tiny entrees and a non-alcoholic drink and I left hungrier than when I went in. I went home at 930 and had to cook myself dinner. Service was inattentive and evidently too busy chatting with people at the bar to check in on us. And, I recognize how small and seemingly petty this seems, but if you're going to charge nearly $40 for an entree (including the 20% fee), paper napkins are unacceptable.

Nice French restaurant in Brookland, DC, if you want to avoid going downtown or to the usual hangout areas. Food is delicious. A bit pricey but worth it. The French toast was great!

We came for the Primrose Burger & Frites based on reviews from Eater DC and it didn’t meet expectations. We ordered medium rare and it was served medium well. The fries were crispy and far superior to the burgers quality. We bumped up the review based on tasty appetizers and cocktails. Overall wouldn’t recommend a burger at this restaurant.

We celebrated our anniversary in this welcoming restaurant. Everyone was very friendly and the restaurant had a neighborhood vibe but big city menu. We enjoyed a delicious dinner of French onion soup with a fantastic crust and no sogginess, steak and halibut were cooked just right. They also made sure to accommodate my allergies. Dessert was yummy to finish out the meal. Plus they offer a nice variety of tasty wines. Highly recommended and it was so relaxing.
