We were told about this place during a tour of the island. It had a very interesting story as being an Orphanage before. My husband and I both love history. This museum offers a lot of local and Texas history. Definitely recommend watching the video in the room to the right, back by the somberos!
This is a well laid out museum which provides a great snapshot of the history of this area, the American west and the added bonus of an art collection. There is something for everyone. The building itself is something to see, the architecture, the stained glass inside and the lovely hand painted borders in the rooms. I have some vision issues so I was thrilled to be able to read the narratives. Good size print on a light background and perfect lighting. The people at the museum were engaging and helpful. We really like having people present to point information out, provide an over view to the collection. Nice use of technology as well.
We missed out on many of the interactive assets because they were being updated. That was probably a good thing as we had information overload when we left! Thank you whomever set up the museum so expertly! Loved the diversity of displays! Loved the building! We left feeling more aware of the history of Galveston and western artists and saddles and more! Well worth the three hours we devoted to this experience!
An very through history of the West from the original people through the evolution of colonial powers, and recent history. Also a special exhibit on Mardi Gras.
Steve Austin, 1831, would not recognized Texas today.
Open Wednesday to Sunday.

Take a day to explore this treasure trove of Texas history, artifacts, and art. There is so much to see here! The saddle collection alone will "rope you in."
A break for lunch is a good idea.
Excellent information about Galveston in particular, the hurricane of 1900, and the orphanage that resided in this building.

So awesome! We had a tour guide and he was absolutely amazing! He did such a great job! This place is definitely worth visiting to learn some of the untold history of Texas!
One of the best museums I've ever been to. We went here on an afternoon, looking to find something out of the heat (it's been a summer here haha) and we ended up here. Free parking in a lovely lot and not too busy. The woman at the front desk was gracious and knowledgeable and the museum was a delight! The little screen next to the exhibits weren't on, but that didn't matter. So much info from maybe the 1700's to almost the present, and literally EVERYTHING in between. Fun little quirks, like exhibits that play music when you walk up, and short little videos around. They just opened a new exhibit for the Orphans that used to live in the home and it was incredibly moving and informative as well. The grounds are lovely and there were lots of flowers blooming and bees buzzing about. Shout out to the gift shop as well. I'm usually a browser but we found a lovely book and I bought a necklace as well. Will definitely return!
