If you don't eat at The Old Bavarian Inn while you're in Helen Georgia, you aren't looking for authentic German food. First off the chef is a graduate of the prestigious Culinary Institute of America. Order the Munich pretzel,it won't disappoint. The pork snitzel was absolutely divine. Don't worry if the restaurant isn't crowded,it just means your at the best kept secret in Helen. Prices were very reasonable and the staff was more than accommodating.
The food was very Good, but we had a bad experience!! The chef was yelling and swearing at one of the workers, we didn't feel safe there! We were there at 5:00 and we were the only ones there. The waitress had no idea what she was doing.
It’s hard to say much; what we traveled to Helen to eat…they didn’t have. The room we were seated in (we had our little dog in a cart with us) was too warm. I’m sure any other time it would be fine! The servers we met were nice, but we just decided to go elsewhere this time.
We have been coming to Helen for over 20 years. Old Bavarian has always been one of our first stops. Tonight they served our Army reunion group, spur of the moment. They welcomed us, served 30 people, first rate delicious food and excellent service. We can't say enough good things about this restaurant. We definitely will continue to come to this restaurant. Thanks again for feeding the Army, Charlie Company 1/37 Armor.
This is the place you'll want to go to if you're ever in Helen. It was just so frickin perfect, exactly what we wanted and expected in a charming Bavarian restaurant. Food was delicious, dining room was small but authentic, service was friendly and relaxing. Make sure you order a Lindemans Lambic Beer, the Peach (Peche) was or favorite...Delicious. We actually went here twice during our 3 day stay. Party of 8, they had no problem serving our party size.
The food was okay. You get what you pay for I guess. We ordered a chicken sandwich and a brat sandwich. They tasted very similar to something you would get at Ingles. I ordered chips for my side and they came back with a mini bag of Lays classic. I thought they would at least have kettle chips. Our server was polite, but things were a little slow considering what we ordered. The best thing about this restaurant was the atmosphere.
Service was a bit slow due to short staffing everywhere so you must be patient. German beer is delicious as always. The schnitzel leaves much to be desired, I'll avoid it next time. Sides were good and staff was friendly.
Waited for about 45 minutes very patiently, once we were seated, my husband says we’re ready to order to which the hostess replied we are short staffed we only have one cook three servers so you need to be patient. I agreed and said understand. Next thing I know a very rude man comes to the table saying if you can’t wait than you can leave we have plenty of people waiting for a table. I was in complete awe, so I asked the hostess what happened? She replied “some one heard you demanding to be taken care of, I said that was not the case at all” then the man comes out and says “get out, I refuse to serve you, I said I’m sorry? He then says “ don’t act stupid like you didn’t hear me, get out and I am not serving you” the tables around me were just as in shock as I was. Mind you I was with my 4 minor children and he disrespected me the way he did. A complete surprise for a tourist destination that he wouldn’t ask the customer about what happened or been nice to say, hey I apologize for the wait if you guys don’t mind there will be a wait but not talk to me in a very disrespectful manner specially being a woman and with kids at the table. My youngest daughter even said mommy is that how a man treats a woman customer or any customer?
definitely worth mentioning now, bathrooms were nasty, dirty, no toilet paper, there were napkins on the outside table for use and paper towels all over the floor. Customer service was definitely a disappointment and coming from the owner or manager. and the stressed and over worked staff like they said while waiting could be seen while taking a smoke break up stairs.
