Most historic place in kochi.

The Jews from Kodungallore were given shelter by the King of Kochi, in 1524. He allocated land in Mattancherry, near his palace, to them. This area later became Jew Town. Take a walk along the Jew Town and you can breathe antiquity.

each of the shops here contains beautiful items with quirky and interesting stories.

Nice locality of Jews establishment. Most of the shops are gifts and antiques. You need to have good bargaining skills. 1 hr is more than sufficient to visit the place.

Jew town situated at Mattancherry in fort kochi. It's famous for the antique shops all alone both sides. Well maintained street to walk and understand about the old Kochin trade and spices market. An ancient town where Jews gathered in the past in days of Portugese, Detch and British and now all of them emigrated. There are many antique shops, restaurants, and other shops like paintings, garments, handicrafts, toys etc.
My journey
Jew Town, nestled in the heart of Mattancherry in Kochi, Kerala, is a captivating enclave steeped in history and tradition. Its origins date back over 500 years when Jewish settlers, primarily from the Middle East and Europe, found refuge here, establishing a thriving community. Today, Jew Town stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of this once vibrant Jewish quarter.

One of the most iconic landmarks in Jew Town is the Paradesi Synagogue, constructed in 1568 and renowned as the oldest active synagogue in the Commonwealth of Nations. Its architecture reflects a blend of Jewish, Portuguese, Dutch, and local Kerala styles, making it a fascinating architectural marvel.

The area is also famous for its bustling market, where narrow lanes are lined with shops selling a kaleidoscope of goods, including antiques, spices, textiles, and handcrafted souvenirs. Visitors can immerse themselves in the vibrant atmosphere, bargaining with shopkeepers and exploring the treasures hidden within each storefront.

Beyond its commercial hubbub, Jew Town exudes a sense of nostalgia, with its cobblestone streets, colorful buildings, and intricate wooden balconies evoking a bygone era. It's a place where history comes alive, inviting visitors to delve into the stories and cultural heritage of Kochi's diverse communities. Whether wandering through its labyrinthine alleys or marveling at its architectural wonders, a visit to Jew Town is an unforgettable journey through time.
