This statue is a notable tribute to Adam Clayton Powell Jnr, famous for representing Harlem in the US House of Representatives from 1945 until 1971. He was the first African-American elected to Congress from the North-East states. He was a spokesperson on civil rights for the Democratic party and was known for encouraging US Presidents to support emerging nations in Africa and Asia as they gained independence. He was also the first black Council member elected to New York City Council. He supported civil rights for African-Americans, including an end to lynchings, Poll-taxes and for fair employment practises. There is much more to his history and his contributions however, and it is worth learning about.

Very nice statute in front of the building renamed for the first black Congress elect for NY. Not sure it's appreciated that random folks can sit so close to the statue itself, as opposed to sitting around the edge, that tended to bother me a bit.

A statue of Adam Clayton Powell Jr., sometimes called the Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Memorial, is installed in Harlem, New York City. The 12-foot (3.7 m) tall bronze sculpture by Branly Cadet was cast in 2005, and inspired by the quote, "Press forward at all times, climbing forward toward that higher ground of the harmonious society that shapes the laws of man to the laws of God.

I love the monument. Before my uncle passed away, he told me that our cousin worked on installing that monument. I never met this cousin. I don't even know his name, but I know he worked on that project

Attended the Harlem Renaissance Band with dancers swinging the night away. Farmer's market is here and drummers play nightly under the monument. Lots of shopping and eating in the area as well.

I love this place! Its historic and a wonderful reminder and encouragement of all the brilliant contributions of the late Adam Clayton Powell Jr. as a local resident in the Red Rooster club, pastor of Abyssinian Church and dynamic icon in Washington on Capital Hill. Always good music(drummers and dancers). Excellent music shows on Thursdays in the summer and the classic extraordinary Harlem week events. Wonderful space!
