This is a hidden gem; if you've never been find time to go! Most people that visit are stunned to learn that such an impressive structure exists in Staten Island. Also, most New Yorkers are unaware of this piece of local history. Bear in mind: the fortress is not always open so call ahead to find out how you can get access to the fort. Call the Fort Wadsworth Visitor Center; part of Gateway National Recreation Area.
The Visitor Center is the best way to start your visit to Fort Wadsworth. There is a museum which provides a great overview of the historic military base and fortifications and there are park rangers on staff who can point out all the best things to see in the park. Definitely worth your time. - Be advised: this visitor center is open seasonally (spring, summer, and fall) and is usually closed in the winter. Call ahead!
I've visited the Glenhurst Nature Trail section of the park; which is accessible from Mountain Ave in Warren. It's a great hidden gem; few people actually know it exists. There are several miles of loop trails and you will definitely see some wildlife once you get towards the back of the park along the Passaic River. Be advised: this area is a floodplain for the river, so some of the trails might be washed out during spring or a particularly rainy stretch of time. In summer it won't be a problem, but I had to get creative to find my way around some big pools of water.
