Kong Heng, Ipoh
Situated in the heart of Ipoh Old Town, this Kopitiam is a storied establishment with a history that traces back to the heights of Perak’s tin mining boom in the late nineteenth century. Renowned for its unique satay that includes internal organs and the beloved Ipoh Hor Fun, the kopitiam has long been a culinary landmark. Its dishes evoke the nostalgic taste of old Ipoh, though some locals from Ipoh consider it overrated. As someone not originally from Ipoh, my perspective is coloured by a sense of nostalgia.
Right next to the Kopitiam is Thien Chun, a restaurant rumoured to be under the same ownership. Adding to the charm of the location is Concubine Lane, a well-known historical site, situated directly in front of the shop. Visitors should note that this area is often bustling, and parking can be a challenge.
Reflecting on the culinary offerings here, I must admit that they do not quite match the rich flavours I recall from years ago. There are other spots in Ipoh where the food might meet or even surpass the standards of what I ‘ve tasted here. However, in moments like today, where nostalgia tugs at my heartstrings, I find myself drawn to this place for reason beyond taste. It’s a journey down memory lane, a chance to relive cherished moments and savour the sweetness of memories. More than the perfect flavour, we sometimes crave the flavours of the past, which are connected with our recollections.

As a Penangite i have always regarded this place as the finest Chinese restaurant in the island. While it may lack the lavish decor and aesthetic appeal of more upscale establishments, its culinary offerings are consistently exceptional. The dish that keeps drawing me back is their exquisite suckling pig @ RM450 per number. In stark contrast to others, their suckling pig is masterful roasted , free from the unpleasant milky aroma that can detract from the flavour of this roasted piglet. The outcome is a succulent, crackling , richly flavoured roasted piglet that truly stands out in its class. additionally, this restaurant is celebrated also for its, ‘monk jump over the wall’, peking duck , steam soon hock and curry prawns .
As a devoted patron, my allegiance to this restaurant is unwavering and I eagerly await my next suckling pig.

The restaurant serves commendable food, with the salmon laksa being delectable and the lasagna exceptional ; among the best I’ve tasted outside an Italian restaurant. The place is cosy with a great ambiance, very friendly staff, and is kid-friendly. The prices are reasonable, a great spot to visit when you crave for good food and having kids with you.
