Mill Lake cabins
2024 Jun 07
Extra large semi-rustic cabins for camping, part of the Waterloo State Recreation Area. Prices run around 60 to 90 per night. Getting there is confusing, but just follow the signs to Waterloo Headquarters then the cabin sign will be near.
There are two groups with 3 and 2 cabins each, with one of them (B-7) being fairly wheelchair accessible with barrier-free entry. Outhouse is right in front of B-7 and is also accessible (and surprisingly clean and well equipped for a rustic campground!). Well water pump at the entrance of each group of cabins.
The interior is basically one very large room, with 3 tall bunkbeds (top one not safe for children under 10), 2 futons, kitchen counter (with drawers and lazy susan but not roll under and no sink), electric baseboard heaters, and electricity. No water inside so plan on bringing drinking/cooking water and a container for well water to keep nearby for washing things.
Echa cabin has a grill, large fire pit, and picnic table. (Bring your own firewood/ charcoal). Small covered porch (with lights). Some cabins (e.g. B-8) also have a bench on the porch.
Walking distance to Mill Lake thru a short trail. It is not a swimming lake but with proper water shoes or boots you can get your feet wet. Little fish, dragon flies, lily pads, butterflies, wild flowers all around. There is a boat access site just a short drive away.
Waterloo has a lot to offer but understand that it’s an incredibly large, spread out area, so you may need to drive between sites. The Eddy Discovery Center is nearby and it’s great for kids - natural science museum showcasing local wildlife, minerals, Native American artifacts, and some fish tanks. This is also where you can get a track wheelchair (a wheelchair with tank-like tracks instead of wheels) so any trail will be accessible.
If you are new to camping and want an easy introduction compared to tents, this is definitely a great fit!!! Accessibility is good but not ideal - but again, it beats tents. The only thing that would make this place better is having more accessible activities for kids within the campground.
Overall highly recommended!
