Independence Harbor
2022 May 24
Abusive and unresponsive condo association. Do not recommend buying here.
Updating: As of May 2022, none of the amenities are open. I see pics of the gym on real estate listings -- I'm not sure that it really exists. The management office is closed for 3 or 3.5 hours a day, which is disclosed, plus a morning meeting plus an afternoon meeting. The building they sit in is locked down and no one answers the door. Nothing here is maintained. Repeated requests go unanswered or someone comes by to say that they "don't see anything wrong" with visibly broken things that would require minimal effort to fix. The city of Edgewater is actually remarkably easy to deal with (and surprisingly friendly) -- but i wasn't expecting to have to do it. The building is underfunded by millions; they've sold off apartments that they used to have (I assume for a super); they are in litigation with the building next door; the board was sued for a no-bid contract worth millions that they entered for redecorating hallways; and one of the neighbors stopped to tell me that the board wants the residents to fund the expansion of the city's public walkway at the condos expense -- it is just mind-boggling to me -- like how about paying off debt first? Maybe make minimal effort to fund a reserve first? A neighbor films us on video inside on our home and management office obviously does nothing. We can't use the patio/outside space without someone complaining -- given that about half the apartments don't have anything outside -- I assume that this is common. The heating bills here are through the roof and when I called PSE&G they said that the neighbors bills were actually higher to the point of being some of the highest that the customer service agent (and later his supervisor) had ever seen. There's just no way to get basic questions answered and you have to hire your own contractors for repairs or be prepared to sit and wait and then fight for every maintenance request and then.once "completed" document how it wasn't and then re-sit and re-wait and re-fight for it to be redone. The views are nice though. Also absolutely 0 communication about things like dog park being closed -- would be nice if they bothered to say when/for how long/etc. -- and that lack of communication repeated time and time again.
I don't know if First Service, or property managers in general, offer this as a service but it would be really great if they had something for new residents to show them where things are in the building, etc. when they move in. Also, if they had an email list for the residents. Also, if when we asked repeatedly they would tell us how to get in touch with the Board. Also, if they would be able to provide basic information -- like updated financial records -- to residents.
Wouldn't live here again.
