Brickmakers Cafe
2023 Apr 01
Looking for a place for lunch today, we happened in to Brickmakers Cafe, which is at the Occoquan Regional Park in Lorton, VA. At Brickmakers, you order at the front, and they give you a pager. Then when your pager goes off, you pick up your food at the front counter.
Brickmakers has an outside eating area, overlooking the Occoquan reservoir. Today everyone was out there because it was a beautiful afternoon. We started with some Fried Calamari strips, which we ordered because they were out of oysters. Calamari strips were very good. For lunch my wife had a turkey and avocado on croissant, which she reported as just fine. I had ham and Swiss on marbled rye. It was good, but a little too much brown mustard for my taste.
We washed it all down with water. The counter service was very polite and our food came quick.
They were good, standard sandwiches. We weren't going there for a fine culinary experience. We wanted a nice decent lunch, and that's what we got. We would go again.
Bob Evans

We had breakfast Sunday morning at Bob Evans on Smoketown Road in Woodbridge. It was nearly noon and we were happy to see that there was only a 5 minute wait. I know a review of Bob Evans is not ground breaking, but sometimes different locations of the same chain give different dining experiences. Such was not the case here. The reason we go to Bob Evans is consistency, in food and service.
We started with coffee, as one might expect. My wife had hotcakes with Bacon, her usual order. There was 4 large hotcakes, and a good sized side of bacon. The bacon was cooked medium, and though we both prefer our bacon cooked within an inch of it's life, she enjoyed it. I had the Big Egg Breakfast, which is 3 eggs, meat and home fries. Instead of meat I got grits. It was a nice portion, and a hearty filling breakfast. The only thing I might say is that the coffee refill took a while.
All in all, Bob Evans is always good, filling comfort food. We've been there many times, and will be back again.
Dumfries Cafe

My wife and I had breakfast at Harold and Cathy's Dunfries Cafe on a Saturday morning. Dumfries Cafe is a wonderful little diner on Route 1, right where the northbound and southbound lanes diverge. It's actually right between.
We started with coffee, which was served at the table. Food is ordered at the front, but delivered to you at your table. My wife had two eggs over easy, with scrapple and white toast. She really appreciated that they had scrapple, as most diners don't. I had 3 eggs scrambled with home fries and grits, also with white toast. It was exactly what I wanted. And the white bread was soft and made great toast. I don't always get to say that.
Service was friendly and quick. Coffee was refilled without having to ask. We will go back, and I suggest you do too if a nice diner breakfast is what you desire.
