Historic Flour Mill Playground
2023 Jan 11
An Imagination Playground in Prince George's County. Nothing for babies (no bucket swings or really small obstacles) but a fun spot for toddlers (2-4 years old) who like exploring and climbing around as well as for older children (5-12 years old) who want to pretend they teleporting back in time to the mill era with wagons and cattle around. The rustic theme is sprinkled throughouy the equipment which includes slides, climbing wall, monkey bars, seesaw, and swings. Several benches and two game tables surround the play area. Not really enough space for a picnic which is a tad unfortunate because there is plenty of parking next to it and a trail to go exploring. All the equipment is in excellent condition.
A description from the Imagination Playground brochure: "Explore this historic park with an existing water mill building. The imagination playground includes an oxen-drawn cart with flour sacks. The water mill play structure has cool water hues of blue on the overshot water wheel, similar to the water wheel that was actually used at the historic site. This is a fun and exciting playground that has many places for climbing, sliding, hanging, and spinning. The site includes an area of large trees which blend into the creek."

The Little Critter design is an Imagination Playground in Prince George's County. Good for a younger crowd (0-10 years old) who like exploring, interacting, and sliding. Great for accessibility challenges with plenty of interactions throughout. Multiple different objects to climb, scale, hang from, or walk across. Not necessarily a lot for older children but great for younger ones. Has (plastic) tire swing, traditional swings (regular and ADA), gliding seats, games, animal sound signs (not all work), benches, and a small table (for kids, not picnics). Bike and car parking next to it. Fields and basketball court adjacent. Equipment is in good condition.
A description from the Imagination Playground brochure: "The Little Critter Playground is the first universally designed, fully accessible playground offered by M-NCPPC Parks and Recreation! Built adjacent to C. Elizabeth Rieg Regional School, it was designed with the special needs of these students in mind. From ramps and shade canopies to colorful and interactive soft surfacing, learning panels with animal sounds, and even a wheelchair-accessible double 'SwayFunGlider' swing, this park truly has it all!"

Watkins Downs Horse Racing Playground

An Imagination Playground in Prince George's County. Suitable for younger (0-4 years old) children who like themed okay and slides. Also good for older children (5-12 years old) who want to have sliding fun while feeling like they are deep in the woods. Several swings (regular, bucket, and ADA), chairs, and plenty of picnic areas around. A water fountain is next to the playground. No bike parking but at least trails to explore the greater Watkins Park. Equipment is in good shape but could use a pressure wash to clean off grime. A fun little spot to fairly close to the Wizard of Oz playground...driven by this one during Festival of Lights and somehow didn't manage to see it! Great quiet escape away from the rest of the park bustle.
A description from the Imagination Playground brochure: "A horse race is always exciting to watch as much as it is to see the horse adorned with flowers after the winning race! A barn will provide a unique play space, which is modeled after the Maryland Preakness grandstand and barns. A starting gate is part of the play structure where kids can pretend to be the horse jockey ready to race! The Maryland flag colors of red, black, white and gold are represented in the colorful play equipment."

Green Garden Playground

One of the Imagination Playgrounds in Prince George's County. Suitable for young (0-4 years old) who like stepping, sliding, or swinging. Also good for older children (5-12 years old) who like scaling or walking balanced across (webbed) objects. Has a couple of swings including bucket seats. No seesaws. Tables to be play checkers or other games. Bike parking. Pollinator and native plants on borders. Everything is in good shape.
A description from the Imagination Playground brochure: "This environmentally sensitive park includes plantings native to Maryland, botanical signage, educational rain garden panels, a community f lower garden, and children’s handprints set in the paving around the playground to symbolize “protecting the earth.” A Green Garden storybook was produced with the help of local elementary school children to tell the story of the magic of the green garden. The story is as creative as the playground, and provides a conservation message of earth, environment, and education."

Playground

A playground with a section for infants and babies as well as another side for toddlers and youngsters. Several slides, a climbing wall, and bridge. Swings and a picnic bench, too. Has some shade in the summer months (not all playgrounds do in the area).
Easily accessible on the Trolley Trail and a short distance away from the shops around Whole Foods, Riverdale Town Center, and Hyattsville.
