Very nice museum with an engaging collection of Italian art, from furniture to sculpture to painting, as well as some history of the city, some great works by Artemisia Gentileschi, Simon Vouet, and others, as well as rotating special exhibitions. The location is great, right on the Arno River, staff are friendly, lockers to store jackets and bags, elevators and a small bookstore as well. A very pleasant small museum with high quality curation, well worth a visit if you’re looking for a museum in Pisa!

One of the world’s great collections of Greek, Roman and Etruscan art, from vessels and vases to sculpture and architectural fragments, mosaic floors, painting, votives, jewelry, erotic art—everything! The museum building itself is perhaps the best example of 19th century architecture in the city and a strong contender for the city’s best building ÜBERHAUPT! A magnificent staircase up to the building’s prominent location on Museum Island is followed by an epic rotunda modeled on the Pantheon in Rome—coat check and tickets are pretty rustic but the collection shines and the display of art and artifacts still impresses with its spare, clean presentation. Unmissable.

A mesmerizing collection of Italian art across the centuries with masterworks by Parmigianino, Raphael, Ludovico Carracci, Prospero Fontana, Lorenzo Costa, Tintoretto and Guercino, to name just some of my particular favorites. Also a bunch of Guido Reni paintings which are contemptible but people love his stuff so who am I to say?
Someone with good taste, in fact! 😂😂😂
The museum itself is a fascinating blend of modern architecture and the re-used spaces of what I believe was a convent but don’t quote me on that.
Well with at least 3 or 4 hours of your time some real stunning works that reward a dedicated look. The Ludovico Carracci paintings are truly stunning he was far more inventive and beguiling than Annibale’s often stilted and clumsy classicism.
As mentioned, skip the Renis.

A gargantuan old Prussian pile of museum with a capital M at the spitze of Museum Island, cupolas, curling staircases, pomp and majesty. The collection is equally fascinating if a bit haphazard—paintings and sculpture from Italy, Germany, Spain, France, and the Low Countries. A wonderful Bronzino portrait, a small Giambologna, trunks, capitals and other architectural fragments from Byzantium, you can easily spend the whole day in here! Worth coming back to again and again, there is always something new to discover or some overlooked corner to see. Oh yeah they have a huge collection of coins too.
