Can't miss the well-marked trailhead at the bridge over the canal. This is where you begin an intense climb. Stop and rest when you need it! The trail is not long - a few hours round trip - but it is steep.
Parking at the trailhead gets filled up very early, and if you aren’t there before 9am don’t even bother trying to park anywhere expect the main park ! The shuttle is real easy to take to the trailhead.
The hike itself wasn’t too special, mostly thick woods without much of a view, until the very end of course. The overlook at the end of the trail is stunning. We got to se a train go through town and it was majestic.

Pretty easy hike. We did it with a bunch of scouts. If you get there early, you can find parking at the train station. (Before 8). Otherwise, take the NP shuttle in. The view was amazing.
Challenging trail but the views at the overlook are worth it. If you aren’t in decent shape, I wouldn’t recommend it otherwise you’ll be stopping every 10 minutes for a break which will make for a very long day. The first hour alone is a rocky incline. I saw senior citizens on the trail but they seemed to be more experienced hikers. I did not see any children but with that said I wouldn’t take anyone under 13 years-old. There’s no access to clean drinking water and there are no bathrooms. A four mile trek doesn’t sound bad but it’s a beating if you aren’t prepared to walk up hill for long sections of trail. Bring plenty of water!
A satisfying day hike. We took the green trail, then blue, then red, and then back on green.
Blue trail - historical signs and info about the Parrot rifle (cannons), interior and exterior forts, remnants of stone walls, etc. The overlook on this trail is higher than the red trail overlook, but nas as good in my opinion because there are a lot of trees that block the view. Pretty steep, constantly, until you get near the top.
Red trail - most popular, overlook is wide open. Lots of rocky areas you can stand or sit on, or even lie down to sunbathe. Even saw a lizard sunbathing here. Has more variations of steepness and flatness in comparison to blue trail. Not as many historical signs as blue trail.
I would probably recommend taking green trail, then red trail, then deciding if you want to add the longer blue trail to your hike.

The most popular trail at Harper's Ferry, probably bc of the "right distance" @ 4.4 mi + views. Walk encompasses Lower Town, across the intersection of Potomac & Shenendoah Rivers (yeah feel that water power), the climbs up to a fine view. Very windy in parts so wear layers. We did not do the upper hike, which has over 20% grade so it gets challenging. Just right for a rigorous hike without being really tough.
An amazing trail of 5 miles. This is a moderate hike with 1500 feet elevation gain. It has some great views too! There is a harder hike of 7 miles that looked amazing. Definitely worth it if you are visiting Harpers ferry!
Going clockwise for difficulty is recommended if you want a strenuous hike. 6.7 miles total from the start of the bridge, over, up and back down. Very rocky hike up, recommended to have good shoes. It's worth the view! Have lunch at the Rabbit Hole restaurant afterwards.
