Delicious onigiri. We came after it closed, but there were many flavors available for takeaway sitting on the counter. We explored the rest of the Katagiri market before taking an unagi and salmon onigiri to go. A delicious treat and wonderful protein-rice ratio for energy on our walk in the city.

If you are looking for a quick and delicious lunch on Lexington and 41st Ave. There are bento boxes, sushi and ramen. This is best Onigiri in the city. Homemade rice ball with quality Japanese rice.

I bought sushi from the store for many times. This is the first time like this, a small dead cockroach from my daughter’s sushi roll between the salmon & sushi rice. oh my god, my daughter was freaking out, me too. Were we lucky or what on 4/1. How did that happen? The store people should pay attention when making the sushi. I don’t know when we can forget about this dead 🪳 issue.

This was perfect for a cheap yet tasty a filling lunch. They also have a good selection of Japanese groceries but I was here for their freshly made omusubi which they offer in a variety of flavors. I got a spicy tuna and chashu pork - both were delicious and two were the perfect amount for a nice lunch.

You come for the food. Its got convenient store vibes with restaurant quality food. Really strange at first to really feel that but try it yourself or keep reading reviews. I bet they’re just like mine. FINAL VERDICT:// Would definitely come here again.

Omusubi Gonbei is a takeout-only place that specializes in making Japanese rice balls (omusubi) filled with various ingredients from fish (e.g. salmon (cooked), spicy tuna, grilled eel) to seafood (e.g. fried oyster, shrimp tempura) to vegetables (e.g. mustard greens, kelp) to the miscellaneous (e.g. nattō, Spam). The rice balls are made daily and use high quality rice (currently from Hokkaidō), so you can really tell the difference in quality from the omusubi at other places. When I got there, they had just started stocking up the display case, so my omusubis were warm, super fresh, and delicious.

The omusubi at OG are also significantly bigger and heavier than others, so one or two make a very filling snack/meal. They offer both white rice (hakumai) and brown rice (genmai) versions which is nice. Prices range from $2.30 to $4.60, so it’s pretty affordable. They also sell Japanese fried chicken nuggets (karaage) which aren’t bad, but it’s not the main attraction.

Omusubi Gonbei is located inside Katagiri Japanese Grocery, and payment for the omusubi is made with the grocery store cashiers. The grocery has a wide range of Japanese drinks and snacks, so you can easily supplement your rice balls with additional items (e.g. drinks, dessert) and then pay for everything at once. If you are looking to eat very good omusubi for a reasonable price in the Grand Central area, Omusubi Gonbei might be a good option.

Amazing little shop with a nice selection of Onigiri to go. I decided to pick up the eel and spicy tuna. The eel was so much better than I was expecting! They also have plenty of roll selections if you’re looking for something a bit more filling. The location is perfect for grabbing a quick bite to run to grand central.

Love this place, and my favorite go to selection are the Karage ball, eel and salmon. I've tried the bomb too, and that one is good as well. Great for snacking and filling enough for a light meal. I'm glad it's near my office so I can pick up for lunch and sometimes on the way home for dinner.
