Located on 4th Avenue, in Downtown San Mateo. This is the original Tsukemen (Japanese dry ramen with dipping soup). I highly recommend their Tokusei Tsukemen: Rich, savory dipping soup, similar to Korean Jajamen, with two types of pork, one piece is smoked pork, but tastes like prime rib, roasted pork belly, and a soft boiled egg. The regular Tsukemen: just has one piece of pork belly (chashu) with their savory dipping sauce! Try their Japanese potato salad: mashed potatoes with slice of soft boiled egg and dried fish eggs. Absolutely loved their crispy chicken karaage!
I can't say I'm impressed... We tried the Tokusei Tsukemen and it was honestly very special. I wouldn't order it again, but the traditional ramen was delicious. The breaded chicken was also nothing special.., The second time we are unlikely to come... The waiting time for a table without prior reservation is almost an hour.... Too long...
I visited Taishoken a few months ago for lunch. It’s one of the most spacious ramen restaurants I’ve ever been to. I arrived as soon as they opened and placed an order for their tsukemen. This was simply delicious and totally reminded me of Rokurinsha in Tokyo Station. I loved the
the dipping broth that had great flavors. As I dipped the noodles it made everything taste even better. You also get two different types of roast pork and it’s some of the largest I’ve ever seen. It’s truly a meal that I’d come back to Taishoken to try again. You won’t be disappointed.

Came here with a friend and chatted over a meal on Tuesday.
Good:
- Love the dipping ramen here - it's a perfect portion size and I love how the soup is just salty enough but the noodles by themselves still taste good - interesting chewy texture and the tsukemen comes with chashu pork too
- Good prices overall
- The yuzu soda is tasty too!
- The vibe is good for a catchup
- The staff are nice and it wasn't too busy inside
Bad:
- Takes some time for the dishes to come out
Overall this place is a classic and I'm a huge fan of the noodles here.

This is a must-visit place for all ramen lovers out there. The restaurant serves authentic ramen that hits the spot. Their signature dish, Tsukemen, is the best, and the Ajitama ramen is equally satisfying. The restaurant also offers a to-go meal kit option, which we tried and found to be super delicious. We were surprised to find that the quality of the Tsukemen was just as good as in the restaurant. The eggs in the ramen were perfectly cooked and the chashu was melt-in-your-mouth. The atmosphere of the restaurant is cool, and the staff is friendly. Overall, this is a top-notch ramen spot that you shouldn't miss.
Went to this place for dinner on a Friday night with a couple of friends for Ramen. Most of their Ramens are pork broth based & I don't really prefer that, so I got their Veggie Ramen with Mushroom & Yuzu broth. The broth was great and tasted very fresh due to the Yuzu. I did ask them to add a soft-boiled egg, which they forgot at first. I also requested for the spicy chili oil to be added for that extra kick. It tasted pretty great - especially the thin fresh noodles.
I was surprised that they didn't have any Chicken protein option for their Ramen - not even as add-ons.
We also ordered the Chicken Karagee & Calamari for appetizers, and they both were fantastic. They have an extensive menu outside of the Ramen that we didn't explore as much.
Definitely would visit here again if I am around San Mateo, although I do wish they had a Chicken Ramen option on their menu. Highly recommend for folks who are open to eating Beef or Pork.
There is parking around the restaurant and easy to find. Reservations recommended.

No other ramen place will give you such thick slice of charsu than Taishoken! And depends what you order, you may have two slices of those! All 3 dishes we tried have super rich and umami broths. The noodles are house made and they are cooked to perfect doness. Their chicken karage is a must try too.
A nice place for a meal, the ramen choices are very good. The menu is comprehensive, seems tasty and a pleasure dining. Try the cucumber, the spicy ramen with extra meso scoop,!
