District Restaurant and Bar
2024 Jun 23
I rarely give 1-star reviews, but when I do, it's because a restaurant exhibits very poor service, takes shortcuts, or employs bad/deceptive sales tactics. Unfortunately, District ticked all these boxes for me, making it a place I won't revisit.
While walking downtown, I noticed a happy hour sign advertising an $8.50 espresso martini, which initially drew me in. Upon entering, I found the rooftop patio cozy and charming with a warm atmosphere, seeming promising at first.
However, our server lacked energy and enthusiasm, which significantly impacted our dining experience. Despite requesting napkins twice, they were slow to provide them. We ordered drinks and decided on the hummus flight and Jerk chicken wings.
To our disappointment, no plates, forks, or cutlery were brought to us. The Jerk chicken wings were overly salty with an off seasoning, and disappointingly small for the price. The hummus flight, advertised as including beet hummus, was missing this component and substituted with a mere garnish of arugula, despite us paying $14 during happy hour. This kind of bait-and-switch felt deceptive and like a poor business practice.
Halfway through our meal, we still had no plates or cutlery until we requested them from the hostess. The overall lack of service and mediocre quality of the food made what could have been a great hangout spot into a very disappointing dining experience.
Based on below-standard service, mediocre food quality, and an overall poor dining experience, I cannot recommend District to others.

Fresca Pizza and Pasta
2024 May 23
I rarely give 5 stars but the value proposition of Fresca makes it a top player in the cheap slice category.
The pizza itself is very good good. Do not expect artisanal pizza like Badíali or NOB. This is strictly no frills pizza but done very well.
The crust and undercarriage is thin, crispy and light. The airy lightness is what differentiates Fresca from other joints.
An XL with 12 slices is $18 when paying in cash, less than half of what other popular joints charge. Drinks are $1.50.
The Margherita is incomparable as the garlic oil and strong basil flavor sets it apart. I've been told the pepperoni pizza isn't good but I didn't bother trying because I'm satisfied with margherita.
Google the story and history of Fresca and you'll soon realize this is the successor to Massimo, a Toronto icon back in the early days.
It's a must try.

Great Fountain Fast Food
2024 Apr 08
I promised I'd write an honest review so here it is.
Great Fountain Fast Food is true to its name, it really is fast. Typically wait about 5-10 minutes to get your meal that's made to order.
I visited twice in order to get a larger scope of the menu. Here's what I ordered and my rating on each dish:
Pork belly on rice - 4.1/5
Garlic fried chicken leg on fried rice - 4.2/5
Cantonese Chow Mein - 2.9/5
Sweet and sour pork on fried rice - 3.2/5
Shanghai noodle - 3.1/5
Honey garlic Pork chop - 2.6/5
Milk Tea 4.7/5
Lemon Tea - 4.6/5
Because of their vast menu, there will definitely be something for everyone. Do not expect restaurant quality as this is a food court pounding out dozens of dishes per hour. However, food is very fresh and taste great. It is incredibly inexpensive. On average, a combo is 12-13$ with a drink. Great value for money
The milk tea and lemon tea is a must try. The milk tea is on my top 3 hk milk tea in the GTA. Sweet and strong without being too astringent (dry mouth feel). The lemon tea reminds me of a much better version of Nestea. I do recommend getting better straws, it would make the drinking experience better.
Staff is very friendly. Hard working family business. They even started social media to keep up with the times.
Highly recommend you check Great Fountain for fast HK and Cantonese Style cooking.

Evergreen Brick Works
2023 Oct 25
If parking was free, this would be a better experience. It's a short hike with some nice scenery. $8 weekend parking. The brick buildings offer local shopping, farmer markets and food vendors. Disappointing that at the top of the hill, the courtyard was vandalized with graffiti and tons of garbagem
The Fourth Man in the Fire Pizzeria
2023 Oct 21
Pizza here is good but there are a few things that could be better. The mushroom garlic pizza was by far the favorite in my group as it was the crispiest with good undercarriage. The dough is very flavorful, chef did a good job cold fermenting. Only feedback is that the flavors need to balance more. The pickled onion and balsamic glaze overwhelmed the essence of mushroom and garlic. Perhaps remove onion in favor of onion jam and the balsamic glaze in favor of black truffle oil. The basil which was visually pleasing has no place on this pie. 7.7/10
The sausage onion pie was the least favorite. Hot honey didn't go well with the other toppings and the pie felt heavy. The bake on the crust was not very crispy and got soggy fast. It looked underbaked compared to the previous.
The pepperoni and mushroom pizza was a bit bland. The pepperoni didn't stand out and the tomato sauce was on the sweeter side.
Overall, I recommend this place as ambience is top notch and heard the bakery is incredible.
