Dog Park at Hellyer County Park
2020 Aug 18
This dog park is new to me, although it has clearly been around for a while. For example, the fencing has clearly been repaired more than once, and the tall brick wall that separates the highway from the dog park has a couple of painted over patches to hide graffiti. However, the park itself is probably almost a quarter of an acre, and has big old trees, fresh water available, real grass!, lots of shade and places to sit for the humans, and (from what I can tell) a friendly and welcoming community. Oddly, the small dog park is just a shadeless, fenced-in patch of spiky sand. I've seen fast running dogs actually tear up their paws on that sand, so I don't know why anyone would want to use it! Stick to the large dog park - it's beautiful and I highly recommend it. Also, if you want to, you can leash your dog and walk around with them in the rest of the park - there's a small lake at the other end, lots of trees and greenery, curving paths, picnic tables, and other nice stuff. It's generally just a very pleasant looking place.
Later edit: now I know what the smaller, grassless section of dog park is for - they use it for the dogs to run and play in when the large, grassy part is very wet and/or muddy. I think this is great -- it means that the grassy Park stays grassy rather than becoming a torn up mud pit. The rangers make sure it all stays nice too, which I appreciate. An excellent park for dogs!
